Live in Optimal Health

“Wish not so much to live long as to live well”, Franklin.

Being skinny is not the same as being healthy. It is easy to assume that someone is healthy because they are thin, but often times that is not the case. Believe it or not, it is possible to be a fat skinny person. It is also possible to be healthy while being on the bigger side. The goal of any fitness and nutrition program should be obtaining optimal health, not becoming a size zero. A healthy weight is just one part of living a healthy life. A healthy mind, body and spirit are a result as well. When the number on the scale is the main focus there is an increased chance of failure because so much energy is focused on the wrong thing. This does not result in a healthy body or mind.

Optimal health requires nourishing your body through good nutrition, and strengthening your heart, bones, and muscles through a variety of exercises and activities. Body weight is not always an effective gauge of health since there are so many determining factors. Body composition and waist measurement are much more accurate indicators.

Don’t forget about your mind. Your mind and body are one and the same, if one is neglected the other will suffer drastically. By eating right and staying physically fit you are much more likely to be mentally fit. Exercise and nutrition have significant effects on one’s mood and brain function. To be truly healthy it is necessary to decrease stress and increase positive emotions in your day-to-day life. There is no way to completely eliminate stress, but the happiest, healthiest people in the world are the ones that are able to deal with it as they experience it. When stress is not released it builds up in our bodies and causes a multitude of health problems, including weight gain. Exercise and meditation, even in small amounts, is a great way to release stress and calm the mind.

Life is less about what actually happens to us, and more about our response to situations when they happen. Learn to view the glass as half full rather than half empty, and remind yourself daily of the things that you are blessed to have and are able to do. Truly being happy and healthy is living in optimal health, not being a certain weight or size.

Living a healthy life is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Without your health nothing else matters. You have to be healthy to enjoy life, provide for your family, and do things you enjoy. Taking care of your health should be your number one priority. No matter what your age you can start living a healthy life. Here are some tips to help get your started.

1. Maintain a healthy weight. You need to lose any excess weight you are carrying around. It is harming your body in more ways than one. Excess fat around your stomach harms organs, extra weight puts strain on joints, and being overweight is the number one cause of diabetes.

2. Eat a healthy well balanced diet. If you already have a health condition you should follow whatever diet your doctor has prescribed. If you are not suffering from any ailments yet, then it will be easier to eat healthy. Focus on vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and lean meats as the staples of your diet. Don’t go overboard on the grains and fruits though because they have more carbohydrates. Following the food pyramid is actually healthy for most people without diabetes or another such condition. If you are trying to lose weight go by the lowest recommended number of servings.

3. Exercise regularly. Exercise is imperative to good health. You can not achieve optimal health without including exercise into your plan. Exercise helps your cells use insulin. It also helps your muscles grow, and allows your heart to stay healthy. Form a regular exercise plan and stick to it. Pick exercises that you actually like so you are more apt to continue doing them.

4. Reduce stress. Find ways of coping with stressful events in your life. Practice meditation or other relaxation techniques to help relieve stress. Stress can cause minor and major problems ranging from heart burn to heart attack. Learn to relieve stress to live longer.

5. Get adequate rest. Sleep is very important to your overall health. Sleeping enough will give you more energy, keep you healthy, and just make you feel better all around. When the body is deprived of sleep serious health problems can occur.

Staying healthy isn’t hard. It does require dedication and commitment. Take your health seriously and do what it takes reach optimal results. Once you get in a healthy routine you will feel so much better, you’ll wonder how you survived the other way. Living a healthy life leads to a happy life. Don’t let anything stand in your way.
